Position Description

The Black Church Studies program at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary seeks a Student Assistant to support student engagement and relationship-building connected to the program’s academic, theological, and community life.

The Student Assistant will work closely with the Director of Black Church Studies to strengthen relationships between the Black Church Studies program and LPTS students. The primary focus of the position is student engagement, relationship-building, and participation in Black Church Studies programming. The Student Assistant will serve as a student-facing presence for Black Church Studies and help create opportunities for students to connect with one another and with the intellectual, spiritual, and communal life of the program.

Student Assistant Responsibilities

The Student Assistant will:

  1. Build relationships with LPTS students and encourage student engagement with Black Church Studies programs and activities.
  2. Help develop and support student-centered programming that creates opportunities for relationship-building, theological conversation, fellowship, and community.
  3. Promote Black Church Studies lectures, workshops, conversations, worship opportunities, and other programs through personal outreach and engagement with students.
  4. Gather student feedback about interests, needs, and potential programming opportunities and communicate these insights to the Director of Black Church Studies.
  5. Collaborate regularly with the Director of Black Church Studies on student engagement, upcoming programming, and opportunities to strengthen the program’s relationship with the LPTS student body.
  6. Provide student-facing support during Black Church Studies events as needed, including welcoming participants, assisting with registration and check-in, supporting program tables, and helping with basic event setup and student engagement.

Physical Requirements

The physical requirements of this position are minimal and generally include:

  • Sitting and standing for routine work and during programs and events.
  • Working at a computer to support communication, planning, and other program-related responsibilities.
  • Standing or moving around during Black Church Studies programs and events to support student engagement.
  • Assisting with basic event setup and registration/check-in as needed.
  • Providing a ministry of presence at Black Church Studies tables, events, and student engagement activities.

The Ideal Candidate

  1. Is a current LPTS student in good academic standing.
  2. Has an interest in Black Church Studies, Black religious traditions, theology, ministry, or the life and witness of Black churches.
  3. Demonstrates strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills and enjoys connecting with students across the LPTS community.
  4. Is dependable, organized, collaborative, and able to take initiative.
  5. Practices open, inclusive, affirming, and interculturally attentive engagement with students from diverse backgrounds.
  6. Has an interest in strengthening their own leadership skills while contributing to the intellectual, spiritual, and communal life of Black Church Studies at LPTS.
